The exciting life of a home décor sourcer: Picking the trends in a hideously unattractive world!

Ever wonder who writes the next seasons' trends? I never could figure out who got to choose what will be in fashion next month… Black? Glitter? Pineapples?!!! PINEAPPLES??!!

Take a look around, some of these things just catch on. What I’ve now realised is that most of the current trends in place were results of a successful experiment by clever and adventurous designers across the globe. They try everything, based on their inspiration, and push it out there for the masses to test. Maybe the pineapple print was always going to succeed, but my guess is it just got traction and started to move. It only takes a few tweets these days, and something as boring as a pineapple print can become the most sought after piece.

I’ve now travelled to China probably a hundred times. What always confuses me is the amount of unattractive design in fashion, household products, manchester, etc. You name it, they have a great ability to create some atrocious designs! But what this also highlights is two factors. One, that they’ve tried and tested thousand of endlessly new design ideas and wait to see what catches. The second is that China is the world’s factory, so of course Germany’s design trends aren’t probably going to be hot in Ecuador this month…  And as they’re all made in China, you see them all!

At the end of the day, who says what is in trend? If you see something enough times in a glossy magazine, then in a store, it becomes the trend you must have. Those hideous glitter suits with furry lapels in the Shanghai departments stores may look awful this month, but could be priceless next year....!

So, it’s a bit of a guessing game how we select our products and create designs for our range of home décor, cushion covers and table linens. You need a keen eye, a highly tuned radar and a leap of faith to see what’s around the corner. Sometimes you miss, sometimes you hit the target, but regardless of the result, the adventure is always fun.
